Week 7 Lecture slides (pdf)

Hello,
Is anyone else having trouble viewing the week 7 lecture slides Inform Design? I can't seem to open the pdf and this is the following error I get: "There was an error opening the document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."
If this could be fixed, that would be great. =)

Cheers,
Sandra

Images For Wiki

hi,

iam trying to upload images to the wiki but it says the upload file is disabled. Am i doing something wrong or can we not upload images to the wiki.

Thanks Dean

Thank you Swanny

Just saw your post on the css for Facebook, lol wish I had seen that a bit earlier!!

Success Criteria?

The criteria sheet states "Evaluation: A page which presents and justifies the success criteria".

Does this mean we have to create our own criteria, and then analyse how much/little we succeeded in meeting that criteria? I'm a little confused...

Filming in tutorial rooms

Hello,

This is just to let you know that I have agreed to allow some people to film students at work in our iMac labs on friday afternoon this week. They should be filming for a short period in 366 from around 1:30pm. If you do not want to feature in such a film and you want to work in the labs at that time, you can work in 365 instead (they have been asked to not film in there).

The filming is being done by ITS for the South Pacific User Conference, which will be happening at the Gold Coast at the end of November.

Finally, a reminder that while the deadline is still officially at 10am on friday (i.e. before the revision lecture), we will accept submissions up until wednesday (exhibit day), which is when the marking will take place.

Facebook Issues

Hello All,

I thought I might post a few fixes for anyone who is having trouble displaying images or using css in facebook. Facebook is extremely anal when it comes to anything remotely stylish as they don't want you manipulating their whole look n' feel. Not sure why they think a barrage of blue is sexy but anyways... here is how to get around it..

First and foremost any images/files you have hosted externally won't show on facebook.. to fix this you have put the full URL of the image/file in the source. For example:

This...
[img src="http://www.blogger.com/TopBar.jpg" height="103" width="649" /]

Becomes this..
[img src="http://comp3505.com/*yourgroup*/TopBar.jpg" height="103" width="649"/]

As for CSS it won't let you use any external css files and it seems to love mucking around with any css you have sitting within the html document. To fix this I simply put the CSS inline.. its kind of ugly but meh whatever..

Here is an example..
[div style="background-image: url(http://comp3505.com/mygroup/Background.gif); background-repeat: repeat;"]

This is discussed here..
http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/UsageNotes/CSS

Anyways goodluck everyone! Never enough time for this stuff :(.

Hosting Outage - Fri 19th 11pm - Sat 20th 7am

I know, poor timing from our dear web hosts, but to let you know in advance Webcity are doing maintenance on their servers from 11pm Fri night to 7am Sat morn.

"Webcity will carry out some major upgrades to our network on
Friday 19th October. This will result in a disruption to our
services, including all domain services, dns services and
hosting services. The disruption will be from 11PM on Friday
to 7AM Saturday."

Would suggest copying all necessary files down to a local machine - just in case things go awry.

Processing Email Visualisation

Here's something cool
http://carohorn.de/anymails/

It's a visualisation of a person's inbox, displayed as little organisms. Quite an interesting approach I think! Only works on macs though. Stupid macs.

Study volunteers required

I presented some slides from Markus Rittenbruch in class last week, which explained a study on 'intentionally enriched awareness' he is about to run for his PhD research. We are still awaiting ethical clearance, but in the meantime if you are willing to participate in his study, please send him an email.

Next Friday?

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if we can have a clarification on what is happening this Friday? I keep hearing that the assignment is NOT due this Friday, but instead we are meant to just show what we have done so far (our prototype) in order to get some feedback. Im just wondering if this is correct, or am I wrong?

Cheers,
Sandra

ftp access online

hey all.

ppl've been having issues with accessing the comp3505 hosting via net2ftp - so here's what you've got to do....

host: comp3505.com (does not need ftp in front)
username: yourusername@comp3505.com (some desktop ftp apps also need this for username)

make sure you also check 'passive mode' and all shall be well.

in desktop apps also check passive mode - can sometimes be hidden in the advanced account settings.

cheers
Lorna (writing as Whippsy to make him look smart :)

Attractive things work better

I mentioned a paper in class today written by an Israeli author who believed that earlier findings which pointed to higher usability for aesthetically pleasing interfaces were culturally biased. Here it is:

Tractinsky, Noam, (1997), Aesthetics and Apparent Usability: Empirically Assessing Cultural and Methodological Issues, in Proceedings of the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI’97), (pp: 115-122), Atlanta, GA: ACM Press.

Chapter 1 of Donald Norman's Emotional Design book is on the same topic, and available online.

There are more links at the end of the slides from today's lecture.

Milgram experiment on obedience

I mentioned the Milgram experiments in class today. The YouTube video has been removed, but it is still up at the moment on Google video, so here it is.

I also have placed a local copy in the COMP3505 resources directory.

Have a think about ethical clearance while you watch this...

The experiments have recently been replicated by UK illusionist Derren Brown, as part of a show where he manipulated people so that they would conduct an armed heist of a security van outside a bank. This is more sensationalist and less scientific, but they did replicate the experiment quite accurately as part of this show, and the final clip is testament to how susceptible some people can be to an onslaught of suggestion.
