Social Sites

Facebook- Already a member, Very addictive, use it alot.

Flicker- Uploaded some photos, but I prefer Photobucket, purley because you can bulk upload.

Twitter- Twitter is a cool concept, but I still dont really understand the point.

Blogger- I like that its a part of Gmail. I also think that its a really nice user friendly blogging site.

Last FM- Loving this site. I love that there is such a large music database and you can listen to all these cool songs from all the artists you like!

Yahoo Pipes- Im haven't really explored this yet. Ive added all my feeds from the sites above, but haven't really used them.

FYI, for flickr, you can bulk upload as well =D.

All you have to do is go to upload and instead of selecting 1 file only, use the ctrl button and click away.

XD

Facebook- Clearly a winner in my opinion. The learning curve is a bit steep, and alot of functions are hidden away but the level of customizability is awesome and with the application you can basically do anything remotely attached to social networking.

Flicker- Flicker does what it says it will do, and thats a rare thing

Twitter- I suppose it's something to use as an icebreaker, knowing what other people kinda shows what theyre interested in and you can talk about that with them. But I'm not sure what else it's for.

Blogger- I've tried a few of the blog stuff and blogger definately is the best, as far as a blog goes. But it doesnt encourage that community aspect you can get in myspace or livejournal.

Last FM- Last Fm is the greatest idea ever. hands down. but Last fm needs to be used in conjunction with a music tagger like Musicbrainz so that your music has the right names. The "events" pages are so handy for checking what gigs are coming up.

Yahoo Pipes- I like pipes, it could be very powerful if every website supported rss. that way i could troll forums, blogs, news sites, etc etc. from the comfort of thunderbird.

btw: outlook 2007 does not support news groups in any way shape of form and forces you to use outlook express which is rather annoying having two mail clients. but outlook (not express) handles hotmail (or used to). But i have the solution! get mozilla thunderbird and use it with Freepops: http://www.freepops.org/en/
This way you can get uq email, pop3, hotmail, gmail, newgroups, rss, all to one handy interface that doesnt make your computer freeze up.

speaking of rss; why doesnt uq make rss feeds for course pages, that way we could get alerts about assignments, timetable changes lecture notes etc etc, with out me having to login to blackboard (which is clunky and slow) or open 4 pages begining with itee.uq.edu/~...

Hey Natasha

There's also some bulk upload tools at http://www.flickr.com/tools/. I use the bulk uploader there and its great - you can add everything and create a set from there and then let it run in the background.

Word of advice - don't run at the same time as a torrent or it will crash on you. V annoying when you've just setup the set and tags etc.
