Hi all. To help you with the discussion in today's tutorial, what I'd like you to do is to get into a group of 4 or 5 and discuss how the concepts from today's lecture (conversation, coordination, awareness) could be applied to the social tools you have been using so far?
Choose one from your group to be the scribe, and agree on a few examples in response to the above question.

Conversation - Facebook walls limited conversations - can be confusing, particularly if not involved
- Blogger comments supports the development of conversations
- Twitter could theoretically be subverted to facilitate conversation, but really doesn't support them
- Last.fm, flickr and & facebook have their own message systems
- none of them really conform to anything approaching a face to face conversation
- facebook wall to a 3rd party would be a conversation breakdown
- negotiation for protected materials ("add me to your friends list")

Facebook: Facebook is an asynchronous distributed interaction.
Conversation: is limited to a public setting, which involves your friends or any facebook member (depending on security settings) posting a message on your wall. Facebook can be used to start conversations but this is usually through finding peoples contact details (email, IM).
Coordination: Networks can be formed between friends or like minded people.
Awareness: Users can find relations to the nth degree. Users are aware of the goings on of friends that disclose such information.
del.icio.us: del.icio.us is an asynchronous distributed interaction.
Conversation: Users can view bookmarks from other users and comment on reviews written on bookmarked sites.
Coordination: Users can see who else has bookmarked the same site and see recommended similar sites.
Awareness: Users can subscribe to other users and in a sense track their internet trends.
Flickr: is an asynchronous interaction.
Conversation: Users can view and comment on other users pictures.
Coordination: Users can favorite other peoples pictures.
Awareness: Unless you specify a private profile your pictures can be viewd by all users, search engines can search your pictures.
Twitter: is a synchronous distributed interaction.
Conversation: twitter is a form of one way conversation, letting other people know what you are doing.
Coordination: other people can see what you are doing / have been doing.
Awareness: any user can see your current status/what you are doing/have been doing.

Facebook can be used as conversations between people as they can post messages on one another’s walls that will be read and seen by everyone. Comments can be put on the photos and conversations can be started from there.
Blogger
Incorporates conversation through journal like writing (blogs) about the person’s life. Photos are also used as conversation pieces.
Flickr
Mainly photographs used as conversation pieces that users can start commenting on and from there start conversations on places they have been to or what they like about it.
Twitter
Allow conversation between strangers and friends.
Coordination

Mostly used for coordination by allowing users to see the schedule of specific users.

Can be used to coordinate events between people and friends.

Its a tool suitable in creating awareness for friends and people that you would like to share with about the interesting things that you come across in websites. It would also be useful for creating awareness in a class about certain websites that might be useful for the class assignments of projects that they are working on.

Suitable for creating awareness about the people that you’re surrounded with and letting them know about your personal preferences.
Blogger
Creates awareness for others about an individual’s thoughts and life events through pictures, videos, musics, widgets and the themes that they used to decorate their blogs.
Flickr
Could be used to create awareness on the environment and places around the world to other users through pictures.
Twitter
Allows a community of people to be aware of one another’s daily activities , events or parties that they can join if are in the vicinity.

Mainly used to create awareness on the music scene and the different genres people are listening to.
