Etiquette and Faux Pas

Being completely new to all this, cept blogger. Any tips from people about etiquette on f8 and the other programs?

In respect to the course I'm sure Stephen will be dealing with the privacy issue, but the extension of this is the etiquette. If any one was an interesting story about what they consider socail faux pas on the web please tell...

Very good questions Simon.

In respect to privacy, the main thing to remember is to keep in mind that nothing on the internet is 100% fullproof, so never put in any personal details. All the sites that have been required by the course have a system where by all information that you enter is protected in such a way that only your friends can see. I might do a post on this in a tick.

I guess the general etiquette is to just treat people how you would treat them if you were interacting with them face to face.

As for Faux Pas, I guess the USENET type netiquette is a good start:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netiquette
and
http://networketiquette.net/default.aspx

As for good stories, perhaps http://bash.org although not very appropriate really (in fact some very bad examples of netiquette), but there are some interesting (and sometimes funny) copies/pastes from social networks on there. Mainly IRC archives.
